What does Suspended mean in a Windows battery report?

Learn how to read Active, Suspended and Connected Standby entries—and when a sleep-period battery drop deserves a closer look.

The Recent usage section of a Windows battery report records changes in system state and power source. Entries such as Active, Suspended and Connected standby describe what the computer was doing at a particular time. They are not battery-health grades and do not, by themselves, prove that anything is wrong.

In simple terms, Suspended means Windows stopped normal screen-on activity and entered a sleep or standby period. The laptop may still use a small amount of power. On systems that support Modern Standby, limited background or network activity can also occur while the display remains off.

Short answer: “Suspended” describes the computer's power state—not a suspended, disconnected or defective battery. Judge the entry by its duration and the charge change around it.

The exact labels and detail available can vary with the computer's hardware, firmware, drivers and supported Windows sleep model. A desktop, an older S3-sleep laptop and a newer Modern Standby laptop may not produce identical histories.

What “Suspended” means in Recent usage

When Windows records a Suspended event, the previous period of ordinary activity has ended. This commonly follows closing the lid, selecting Sleep, pressing a configured power button or reaching the sleep timeout. A later Active entry usually marks the return to normal use.

Read the timestamps as a sequence rather than treating one row in isolation. For example, an Active row followed by Suspended at 10:30 p.m. and Active at 7:00 a.m. describes an overnight sleep interval. Compare the charge level before suspension with the level after resume to estimate how much charge was lost during that interval.

Small differences can be affected by rounding and battery-gauge estimation. Repeat the comparison across several similar periods before drawing a conclusion. A single unusual night is weaker evidence than a consistent pattern.

What Connected Standby means

Connected Standby was the earlier name for the low-power model that Microsoft now calls Modern Standby. It is designed to provide a phone-like instant-on experience. While the screen is off, compatible hardware can move between very low-power idle and short periods of activity for permitted system, device or network work.

That is different from keeping the whole laptop fully awake. Microsoft explains that software and hardware are expected to become quiet enough for the system to spend most of the standby session in a low-power state. Brief activity may occur for reasons such as maintenance, supported background tasks, networking or hardware events.

Starting with Windows 10 version 2004, Adaptive Connected Standby allows Windows to manage network availability during sleep. Therefore, the words “Connected standby” in a report should not be interpreted as proof that Wi-Fi stayed continuously active.

Check which sleep model your laptop supports

Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run:

powercfg /a

Windows lists the sleep states available on that computer and explains why other states are unavailable. A Modern Standby system commonly lists Standby (S0 Low Power Idle), sometimes with network-connected or network-disconnected wording. A traditional sleep system commonly lists Standby (S3).

Do not try to force a different sleep model with an unofficial registry tweak simply because another computer uses it. Supported states depend on platform design and firmware. Use the configuration intended by the laptop manufacturer unless its official support guidance says otherwise.

Is battery loss while suspended normal?

Some battery loss during sleep or standby is normal because sleep is not the same as shutdown. The useful question is whether the loss is small and consistent or unexpectedly large for your device and interval.

Possible contributors to higher sleep-period drain include:

  • background work or Windows maintenance;
  • network activity during Modern Standby;
  • a device or driver preventing deeper low-power operation;
  • USB accessories or a dock drawing power;
  • updates, indexing or synchronization around the sleep period;
  • high temperature or a laptop stored where it cannot cool properly;
  • a worn battery with reduced Full Charge Capacity; or
  • the PC waking unexpectedly instead of remaining in standby.

The battery report can show the timing and charge change, but it usually cannot name every responsible component. For that, Windows provides more focused diagnostic information.

How to investigate unexpected standby drain

1. Confirm the time window

Use Recent usage to identify when the laptop became Suspended or entered Connected Standby and when it returned to Active. Check that the interval matches the period you are investigating.

2. Compare more than one session

Record the charge change over several similar overnight or workday sleep periods. Keep the starting charge, duration, connected accessories and room conditions reasonably consistent. Trends are more useful than one isolated result.

3. Review Battery usage in Settings

Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage. Review which apps used battery during the available time range. Windows may allow background activity controls for some apps, although the options depend on the application type and device.

4. Generate a SleepStudy report on a Modern Standby PC

Open an administrator Command Prompt and run:

powercfg /sleepstudy /duration 7

Microsoft's SleepStudy report summarizes Modern Standby sessions, including their duration, energy change and activity. It can also identify active components associated with problematic sessions. The command applies to systems that support Modern Standby; use powercfg /a first.

5. Apply supported power-saving settings

Open Settings > System > Power & battery. Review Energy recommendations, Energy saver, power mode, screen and sleep timeouts, and battery usage. Install Windows, firmware and driver updates only through Windows Update or the laptop manufacturer's official support page.

6. Separate standby drain from battery wear

A healthy battery can still lose charge because of excessive standby activity, while a worn battery can make a modest energy loss look like a larger percentage drop. How to read the report without overdiagnosing

  • Use timestamps: connect the state change to a real event such as closing the lid or resuming work.
  • Check the power source: confirm whether the laptop was on battery or AC during the interval.
  • Compare start and end charge: look at both percentage and available energy when the report provides them.
  • Allow for estimation: the battery gauge can round or revise its estimate after resume.
  • Look for repetition: several similar sessions provide stronger evidence than one row.
  • Use the right report: Battery Report is useful for history and capacity; SleepStudy is more focused on Modern Standby activity.
